There are always those wonderful little moments in life that make it worth living. One in particular I like is finding “hidden” spots. Places where few have tread or maybe even dare to go. I am writing this from one of those places.
Sometimes I travel for work and this week I have spent a few days in Minneapolis. I have a late flight out but decided to telecommute at the airport for a while, maybe wander about and grab a bite. Too often I make it to my airport in a complete rush and have just enough time to catch my breath before wedging myself into a shrunken bus seat next to a stranger desperate to make nervous small talk. As luck would have it, I discovered a neat little secret area at MSP.
Go to the D Concourse and just as you are walkin
g into the open area for the gates, look to your left. You should see a darkened staircase tucked next to the wall with an unlit sign stating “Observation Deck”. I didn’t see any signs or barricades to the stairs, so up I climbed, three flights worth. At the top, sure enough, was a spectacular view of a good portion of the airfield. Directly in front of you is the E Concourse. A slight turn to right and you are greeted by the Minneapolis skyline. Come around the stairs and see the Minnesota ANG base and a spit-shine line of C-130′s and in front of it, Runway 12 and 30 (Trivia: a runway’s number designation can be anything from 1 to 36 and denotes it’s degree heading on the compass, minus the last zero. Neat, huh?) Off to the right, the long C Concourse and a slew of busy busy commuter jets.
If you ever find yourself in MSP, you should check out this quiet little secret area. It provides you with a little bit of solace and quiet contemplation. When I arrived there was nobody here and since then, a few people came up to look but they did not linger. Their loss, I suppose. The broadcast system music isn’t half bad, but you might want to bring your own. Spend a few minutes, or a few hours. Certainly a lot nicer than rubbing shoulders with the business drones endlessly chatting and tapping away at their mobile devices (says the guy tapping away at on a laptop…ahem.)
